If the spontaneous release of Adam Lambert's "Welcome to the Show" last week felt a bit unorthodox, the singer poses this question: Are there even related standards anymore?

In an an interview with Idolator published today (March 21), Lambert says there was really no rhyme or reason to unveiling his new single, which doesn't belong to any particular album or EP. To put it simply, he just liked it.

"I said, 'God, I just want to put something new out. Why not? Why do we have to follow any sort of rules?'" he explains. "It’s spring, and it feels like a new year...It also doesn’t necessarily signify that The Original High is over, by any means, either. It was just, hey — we wanted to put out a song."

And while the new material was certainly unexpected, Lambert says his current tour is quintessentially him: there's drama, theatrics and vocal standouts to please longtime fans.

"The beginning of it is very moody and darker and kind of angsty," he notes. "Then we go into a middle section of the show which is kind of heartfelt, much more vocally driven — you know, the musical integrity section of the show. And then the third section is all the dance music that I love."

When the tour wraps up next month, Lambert will proceed to Canada to film the part of Eddie in Fox's forthcoming Rocky Horror remake. He says he was originally considered for the role of Dr. Frank-N-Furter, but declined out of concern it could offend fellow members of the LGBTQ community.

"You know, I thought to myself, my friends that are trans — how are they going to feel about casting a non-trans person saying, 'I’m a sweet transvestite from transexual Transylvania?' It’s dicey," he shares, and says the Laverne Cox's casting in the famous role is a better fit. "I think they made a really bold, refreshing choice on that. It’s very forward-thinking and it feels very right now, which is going to make this remake really interesting."
