The first trailer for The House is about what you’d expect based on the plot description: Amy Poehler and Will Ferrell need to raise money to send their kid to college, so they start an illegal casino / underground fight club in their basement, various hijinks ensue, etc. It looks pleasant enough, and the combo of Poehler and Ferrell (with a handful of other funny people) should make for a solid comedy — though this one looks a bit safe, which is surprising considering that The House comes from the minds behind Neighbors.
And now for something a little different from the Logan marketing department: Amid the usual glut of TV spots and featurettes comes this unnerving found footage-style promotional video, which offers a look inside the creation of X-23 — aka the young female clone of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine. It’s an intriguing change of pace from the typical ads, that’s for sure.
Today in news filed under No Doy, Lin-Manuel Miranda has confirmed what we’ve all suspected ever since Hamilton became a Broadway sensation: The inevitable film adaptation is definitely coming…just, not anytime in the imminent future. Between plotting epic fantasy franchises and working on animated feature projects, Miranda is a pretty busy guy, to say the least. Besides, he just finished his run on the hit historical musical. Give the man a moment, will you?
After starring in a handful of disappointing films, including last year’s Collateral Beauty and Suicide Squad, it sure would be nice to see Will Smith star in a decent movie again. Bad Boys 3, which was recently delayed, could be that film — maybe, possibly — but Disney’s new Dumbo movie seemed like more of a sure thing given the studio’s reliable formula for live-action remakes. Recent reports revealed that Smith was in talks to star in Tim Burton’s reimagining of the classic Disney film; unfortunately, those talks are no longer happening.
Unless you binge-watched the heck out of Fleabag on Amazon recently (you should), then you may not be particularly familiar with the name Phoebe Waller-Bridge, the brilliant creator and star of the fierce British miniseries. But that’s beginning to change, as Waller-Bridge’s talents have become increasingly notable — enough to catch the attention of Phil Lord and Chris Miller, as the filmmaking duo are currently eyeing the actress for a “key role” in the upcoming Han Solo Star Wars spinoff.
Way, way back in February 2015, Warner Bros. hired Community vet Rob Schrab to direct The LEGO Movie sequel — a pick fully endorsed by filmmaking Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who are a teensy bit busy working on a certain Star Wars movie, and thus unable to helm the follow-up to their animated blockbuster. Almost two years later (and several months since we last heard anything about the sequel), there’s apparently been a creative shakeup, as Schrab has reportedly left the project and been replaced by the director of Trolls.
A handful of Super Bowl ads have already landed online ahead of this Sunday’s big game — it’s the usual mix of TV spots for upcoming movies like Ghost in the Shell and Transformers: The Last Knight, along with a few ads featuring familiar faces like Gal Gadot and John Malkovich promoting businesses and collecting paychecks. And then there’s Honda. Like others, their ad for this year’s Super Bowl also features several beloved celebs, but there’s something kind of unnerving about the execution.
If someone asked you to recall Keanu Reeves’ earliest acting gig, you might think of Parenthood or Babes in Toyland. As it turns out, the intensely likable star of John Wick: Chapter 2 started his career a bit earlier than that, and like us non-famous folks, Reeves’ first job wasn’t exactly pleasant; in fact, it was kiiiiiind of awkward, but that just makes this little-seen footage of Reeves as a teenage reporter on a Canadian kids’ show all the more rewarding.
This week, Milla Jovovich’s Alice (we know her name is Alice because she says “My name is Alice” like, 12 times in every movie) returns to the big screen to battle viral zombies yet again in Resident Evil: The Final Chapter. As the title implies, this is to be the last sequel in the franchise, which would be great because Milla clearly deserves a nap — I say “would be” because, as movie franchise history has taught us, there is no such thing as a final chapter. To prove it, we’ve collected 15 movie sequels with titles that promised they’d be the last; they most definitely were not.
When the 2017 Academy Award nominees were announced this morning, the list offered the usual array of snubs and surprises — the latter of which ranged from pleasant to baffling; Moonlight picked up eight nods and a record number of black actors were nominated (Oscars #NotSoWhite this year), while Passengers picked up two nods (they just had to give that movie something, didn’t they). As expected, many of this year’s picks feel “safe”; it says something when the most divisive nominee is a musical about jazz — or is it? Maybe the Academy’s La La Land love and its increased inclusivity are distracting from the low-key elephant in the room.
If you smell what The Rock’s been cookin’ (i.e. if you follow him) on social media, then you know that the charismatic and insanely busy actor recently had a very good meeting over at DC about the long-awaited Shazam movie. (No, not like that make-believe ’90s movie.) Apparently, that meeting went so well that the studio has reportedly split the film into two projects — or, more likely, they realized the error in thinking they could just cast Dwayne Johnson as a super-villain in someone else’s movie.
If you didn’t like The Ridiculous 6 or The Do-Over, don’t worry — Netflix isn’t giving up just yet. The streaming service is determined to make you love Adam Sandler again, and this time, they’re taking him back to 1994, which is probably the last time he was genuinely entertaining (OK, with the exception of The Wedding Singer). Yep, there’s another new Sandler movie coming to Netflix; behold, the first trailer for Sandy Wexler.
