‘The Emoji Movie’ Parodied ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and Twitter Was Not Having It

An animated film featuring anthropomorphic emojis like Poop and High Five is probably not the best, um, vessel for a parody of a dystopian series in which fertile women are forced to procreate with wealthy men. But that’s exactly what happened late yesterday afternoon, when the marketing for The Emoji Movie took a decidedly dark and exceedingly ill-advised turn. In a tweet that has since been deleted, the film’s official account shared a promotional photo parodying The Handmaid’s Tale, Hulu’s acclaimed series adaptation of Margaret Atwood’s classic novel. Unsurprisingly (and delightfully), the public response was swift and savage.

Those ‘Justice League’ Reshoots Are Reportedly Very Extensive and Super Expensive

Rumors began circulating earlier this year about “extensive” reshoots on Justice League, which are now being overseen by Joss Whedon following Zack Snyder’s recent exit. Although reshoots are fairly typical and often factored into the post-production schedule, particularly on big budget blockbusters such as this, the film’s cast downplayed the matter at Comic-Con over the weekend. But a new report doubles down on earlier rumors and reveals just how complicated things have become for Justice League in the final stretch.

Universal Reportedly Wants Channing Tatum for ‘Van Helsing’ Dark Universe Reboot

Universal’s recent attempt to launch a “Dark Universe” of monster movies with The Mummy didn’t exactly go as planned. The action-horror flick starring Tom Cruise is just the first of several reboots the studio has in development, and though it grossed $390 million worldwide, it earned a fairly disappointing $79 million stateside — hardly enough to merit the creation of an entire franchise, but Universal is determined to move ahead with their plans all the same. Those plans now reportedly include trying to land Channing Tatum for the lead role in a reboot of Van Helsing.

Disney Can’t Seem to Find Actors for Guy Ritchie’s Live-Action ‘Aladdin’

Disney has several live-action remakes in development, but two titles in particular have attracted a little extra attention: Aladdin and Mulan. Although pop culture is becoming increasingly socially conscious, Hollywood’s unfortunate history of whitewashing has left many (rightfully) concerned over the casting for both of these films, especially since the studio behind them doesn’t exactly have the best track record with diversity. And while Disney has made it clear that they’re committed to casting actors of relevant ethnicity in Aladdin and Mulan, a new report reveals that the studio is struggling to do so for at least one of those projects.

Comic-Con 2017 Unveils Thursday Schedule With 20th Century Fox, a Big Netflix Surprise and More

San Diego Comic-Con, like life, comes at you fast. With just a couple of short weeks until SDCC 2017, the first panel and scheduling announcements have started to roll in — including, wonder of all wonders, a Twin Peaks panel in Hall H (unfortunately, David Lynch will not be giving us the mystifying pleasure of experiencing “David Lynch at Comic-Con”). Following that wild announcement, SDCC has unveiled their official Thursday film lineup, which includes panels from 20th Century Fox (hello, Deadpool!), the DCU and Netflix.

‘Baby Driver’ Review: Another Great Hit for Edgar Wright’s Collection

You know an Edgar Wright film when you see one, even if Simon Pegg isn’t nearby — the distinctive (and often heartfelt) sense of humor, the impressive editing, the momentum, and the predictably awesome soundtrack, all working in time to deliver a film that’s remarkably poignant for such a well-oiled machine. Baby Driver might not be quite what you’re expecting from the director of Scott Pilgrim and Shaun of the Dead, and yet it’s entirely what you’re hoping to see. Despite some of its unexpected qualities and low-key visual style, it is perhaps the most Edgar Wright film to date.

Edgar Wright on ‘Baby Driver’ and the Song That Started It All

Wright’s long-awaited follow-up to The World’s End stars Ansel Elgort as a talented getaway driver who relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to enhance his skills. Inspired by heist films like Point Break and The Driver (obviously), Baby Driver is not a musical in the conventional sense, but one in which the action (like its titular character, whose name really is Baby) is driven by diegetic sound — in this case, it’s music. I spoke with Wright about all of this and much more during his recent trip to Austin, where he was the surprise guest at a special screening to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Alamo Drafthouse, a theater that holds a very special place in his heart. Our 10-minute interview quickly morphed into 20 because, as Wright himself would tell you, the man can talk.

Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have officially announced the start of production on their new Godzilla sequel, with Krampus director Michael Dougherty at the helm of the film that brings us one step closer to an epic crossover with Kong. Although the previously revealed title — Godzilla: King of the Monsters — is curiously absent from this morning’s announcement, it does offer some intriguing new plot details…including which classic monsters we can expect to see in the follow-up to Gareth Edwards’ 2014 blockbuster.

‘Avengers: Infinity War’ Directors Tease Mysterious Vault in New Photo

How about another piece of Avengers: Infinity War news? Directors Joe and Anthony Russo shared a cryptic new photo from the set of the upcoming super-sequel, and, as with most pics posted to their shared (and previously somewhat secret) Twitter account, this one was posted without a caption — leaving us to puzzle over exactly what we’re looking at. We have a sneaking suspicion we’ve seen this place before, just maybe not from the outside.
