Peter Dinklage Solves a Murder With Magic Brain Science in ‘Rememory’ Trailer
The hook of the upcoming thriller: a new technology can extract and display memories from a person’s brain.
Was Nikolaj Coster-Waldau’s Head Pasted on Dwayne Johnson’s Body For the ‘Shot Caller’ Poster?
The Internet is a panopticon for cheating. With millions of people in possession of millions of different knowledge bases killing time online, there’s always someone who makes note of even the most minute fast one and publicizes it for all to see. It was not too long ago that an attentive Reddit user noticed that a small snippet of B-roll from Spider-Man 3 had been recycled for the Life trailer. And now, in that proud tradition of eagle-eyed esoterica, the denizens of the Internet have identified Nikolaj Coster-Waldau and Dwayne Johnson as sharing a single body. (Unfortunately, not in a Split-type situation, but still.)
Criterion Announces Its Biggest Box Set Ever, a Collection of Olympic Films
The Criterion Collection has emerged as the gold standard of boutique home-video releasing outfits, both in terms of their eclecticism and access. It seems like they’re always unveiling some big new project, whether it’s a restoration of an aging classic, a spotlight on a more obscure curio (their House disc remains a top seller), or a handsome release for current pictures. And a tweet today announced what may be their most staggeringly ambitious project, a box set the like of which dwarf any the company has attempted before. Martin Scorsese’s World Cinema Project has been suddenly supplanted as the must-have gift for the movie obsessive in your life.
Chiwetel Ejiofor Working on His Roar as Possible Scar in Live-Action ‘Lion King’
We won’t know if the upcoming live-action Lion King remake is a ‘good movie,’ however you might define the term, until its release on July 19, 2019. But with two years to go until the big unveiling, director Jon Favreau is already off to a strong start. There‘s been a clever little edge to his casting thus far, as he’s tapped black actors for the lion roles in the film (Donald Glover will voice Simba, and James Earl Jones will lend his velvety baritone to sage father Mufasa) and white actors as the other members of the animal kingdom (Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen will voice Timon and Pumbaa; John Oliver has signed on as toucan Zazu), reinforcing the allegory of discord among the royal family and fully transposing it to its African setting.
Channing Tatum‘s Daughter Doesn’t Like Channing Tatum Movies
Channing Tatum’s a delight — fleet-footed dancer, lovably lunkheaded actor, and crooner of the occasional showtune, he’s got more of a claim to the title of America’s sweetheart than just about anybody. But while I may love Channing Tatum, and you may love Channing Tatum, he’s got one critic he just can’t seem to win over: his four-year-old daughter Everly.
New Report Indicates Gamers Are Frequent Moviegoers As Well
While my Twitter mentions and my inbox’s spam folder have made it abundantly clear that video game enthusiasts do not like movie critics, by and large, they do like movies. The video gaming site Machinima (itself a property of Warner Bros., which is worth knowing) recently conducted a survey that indicates as much, polling gamers about their moviegoing habits and preferences. And while the gaming community remains on constant watch for the twin scourges of studio-sponsored bribery and bias among critics, they have not allowed them to dampen their enjoyment of a night out at the cineplex.
McDonald’s Actually Sent the ‘Rick and Morty’ Creators a Half-Gallon of Szechuan Sauce
It all began when Rick and Morty creators Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon went all in on an obscure, absurd joke until it grew into an all-encompassing metaphor for the disappointment and frustrations of life. (As is the show’s wont.) In the recent opener for Season 3, profligate alcoholic scientist Rick speaks at length about his lifelong quest to track down some Szechuan Sauce, a discontinued condiment that McDonald’s packaged with McNuggets as part of a promotion for Mulan in the ’90s. (It makes more sense in context, but barely.)
The ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’ Soundtrack Sounds Like ‘Super Mario Bros.’ Music
The Internet has made many previously unthinkable wonders possible: I can watch movies without taxing the lower half of my body, aggressively explain to teenagers in the Philippines why they should really be getting into Riverdale, and get food delivered to my house without speaking to another human being. But apart from turning otherwise normal people into reclusive hermits, the great gift of the Internet is the sharing and popularizing of minutiae. When someone online notices something neat-o, they’re free to share it with the rest of the online world, who will in turn mutter, “Huh, that’s neat,” before moving on with their own lives.
‘Wonder Woman’ Is the Top-Grossing Summer Movie of 2017 in the U.S.
Our children won’t believe us when we tell them that there used to be doubt over whether a female-fronted superhero movie would work at the box office. Even at present, the days of studio executive hand-wringing over whether audiences would deign to shell out their precious $11.75 to see a film in which a woman — who was not a man — did superhero things feel favorably remote. For director Patty Jenkins and her marble-carved star Gal Gadot have proven beyond all debate and rage-choked internet commenting that women are perfectly capable of making a whole mess of money during blockbuster season. And now it’s official.
Donald Glover’s All Dressed Up in First ‘Han Solo’ Set Photo
Production has gotten up and running on Ron Howard’s much-talked-about Han Solo spinoff film, a fact we know because he personally told the whole Internet last night. Unstoppable Instagram power user Howard posted the public’s first peek into his heavily-guarded Han Solo set to the photo-sharing platform, and while it doesn’t reveal all that much, we do get a glimpse of one likely fan-favorite character. He’s been more elusive in recent months, but Donald Glover has been spotted, and while our new impression of Lando Calrissian may be small and seen through a display monitor, he’s still unmistakably fly.
Jon Stewart Interrupts ‘Jimmy Kimmel’ to Joke With Kimmel-Themed Bar Mitzvah Boy
When young Jews hit that magical age of 13, they go through the coming-of-age ceremony known as a bar mitzvah (for boys) or a bat mitzvah (for gals). There’s music, dancing, and food, you receive lots of money for bravely keeping a straight face while assorted relatives pinch your cheeks, and if you’re really lucky, a major late-night personality will bless your entry into the world of adulthood with his virtual presence.
Matt Reeves Will Ditch Ben Affleck’s ‘The Batman’ Script and Start Over
Rough day to be Ben Affleck, the kind of day that makes you just wanna get away from it all by sneaking into your car and having a quick sad-vape. His performance as Batman has begun to emerge the fanbase’s most-loathed, and to add insult to injury, he was ousted from the director’s chair on upcoming solo film The Batman. Now, even more insult has been added to that injury, as replacement director Matt Reeves has begun to clean house and get himself comfy in a new franchise.
