If Daredevil and Elektra can't last, what hope do the rest of us have?

Jennifer Garner and Ben Affleck, who were married 10 years ago—nearly to the day—will officially divorce, they confirmed to PEOPLE. The couple was first rumored to be heading toward a separation last month after not having been seen in public together for weeks.

"After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce," Jennifer and Ben told PEOPLE in a joint statement. "We go forward with love and friendship for one another and a commitment to co-parenting our children whose privacy we ask to be respected during this difficult time. This will be our only comment on this private, family matter. Thank you for understanding."

The actors had three children—Violet, Seraphina and Samuel—over the course of their marriage, and will seek mediation as they head toward independent lives.

The couple met on the set of 2003's Daredevil and began dating in 2004. They married on June 29, 2005 in Turks and Caicos in a ceremony officiated by Garner's Alias co-star Victor Garber.

Affleck will star as Batman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, which will follow the superhero as he confronts the Man of Steel, only to find that a secondary adversary will prove a much greater threat.
