This Replica ‘Blade Runner’ Street at Comic-Con Is Insane
The original Blade Runner from Ridley Scott was set in the far-flung future of the year 2019. So we’ve still got a couple years left to go before we find out whether it’s vision of a dystopia full of lifelike androids, mammoth building-size video billboards, and questionable Harrison Ford voiceover narration will come to pass. But this fall, the sequel, Blade Runner 2049, comes to theaters. To hype the big release, Warner Bros. recreated one of the film’s famously foggy, noirish, Los Angeles city streets at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. The pictures coming out of the convention of con-goers wandering through bars and clubs, surrounded by actors in costume (and character!) are really impressive. Take a look:

By the start of the decade, Comic-Con became famous for these kinds of insanely large publicity stunts (like the working Flynn’s Arcade built for TRON: Legacy in 2010), but they’d tailed off to some extent in recent years as studios realized the absurd amounts of money they spent on these things didn’t automatically translate into huge box office (like, again, the working Flynn’s Arcade built for TRON: Legacy in 2010).
The last time I was there, in 2015, there wasn’t anything on this scale. But this is very cool, and it looks like it’s worth checking out if you’re in San Diego. The Blade Runner 2049 Experience is across the street from the convention center, and open from 10AM to 7PM Thursday and Friday, 9AM to 7PM on Saturday, and 10AM to 6PM on Sunday. If someone asks you to take a Voight-Kampff test, though, walk away. Blade Runner 2049 opens in theaters on October 6, 2017.
