Now that Brie Larson is the reigning queen of independent film, she's looking ahead to a potential blockbuster series.

According to VarietyLarson is the top choice to play Captain Marvel in an upcoming standalone film. While Marvel has not confirmed the news, Variety says the studio's hoping to nail down the casting soon so the character can appear in one of Marvel's sister-franchise films before going solo.

Meg LeFauve and Nicole Perlman are writing the script for the film and Kevin Feige is producing.

Captain Marvel, a United States Air Force soldier named Carol Danvers, was first introduced in the Marvel Super-Heroes comic book series in the 1960s. She was badly injured by a massive explosion, but as the detonating device was Kree-made (an advanced alien race), it gave Danvers the power of superhuman strength, speed and healing. Captain Marvel first appeared in her own series as Ms. Marvel in 1977's Ms. Marvel #1.

Agent Carter showrunners Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas most recently penned the ninth volume of Captain Marvel in October 2015.

When rumors first started circulating that the Room Academy Award-winner was in talks for the role in 2015, she told MTV UK that she wasn't sure she was ready to play "a man" (there is a male character named Captain Marvel — aka Shazam — but that's DC, not Marvel).

"Oh wait no, Chris Evans is Captain America. Who’s Captain Marvel? I have no idea what I’m talking about," she said. "But people want me to play this? Okay, good to know. I guess I gotta start reading the comic book."
