Emmy Nominations 2011: ‘Mildred Pierce,’ ‘Mad Men,’ ‘Modern Family’ Earn Top Honors

Mad Men and Modern Family
AMC / ABC

As expected, ‘Mad Men’ and ‘Modern Family’ were among the top series nominated for the 2011 Primetime Emmys, announced early Thursday morning.

‘Mad Men’ picked up an impressive 19 nominations, the most of any drama series, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Leading Actor (Jon Hamm), Outstanding Leading Actress (Elisabeth Moss) and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Christina Hendricks).

Meanwhile, last year’s Outstanding Comedy Series winner, ‘Modern Family,’ earned an additional 17 nominations this morning. Better yet: All six of its principle actors were nominated in the acting categories, including Ed O’Neill, who was the only major cast member not to receive a nomination last year.

Among the surprise nominations were Mireille Enos, who earned a Outstanding Leading Actress in a Drama Series nomination for her performance on AMC’s ‘The Killing,’ and Johnny Galecki, who joins his ‘Big Bang Theory’ co-star Jim Parsons in the category of Outstanding Actor in a Comedy Series.

But perhaps most surprising were the multiple nominations for the much-maligned miniseries ‘The Kennedys,’ starring Greg Kinnear, Barry Pepper and Katie Holmes. In addition to Kinnear and Pepper, the ReelzChannel miniseries earned a jaw-dropping nomination in the Best Miniseires or Movie category.

Notable snubs included Lea Michele, nominated last year for her performance on ‘Glee,’ and Kyra Sedgwick, who last year won a surprise Emmy for ‘The Closer.’

The nominations were announced by Melissa McCarthy, nominated this year for ‘Mike and Molly,’ and Joshua Jackson of ‘Fringe.’ HBO led the field with 104 nominations, due in part to great showings by ‘Boardwalk Empire,’ ‘Game of Thrones’ and ‘Mildred Pierce,’ the year’s most-nominated program, with 21 nominations.

The 2011 Primetime Emmys air Sept. 18 on Fox.
