J.K. Rowling has Already Written a ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Sequel

One of the major truths of the entertainment industry is that there will never be a more interesting movie than the one you haven’t yet made. This weekend, while The Legend of Tarzan director David Yates was gently trying to nudge conversations towards his film currently in theaters, people were understandably curious about his upcoming return to Hogwarts, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. And Yates let a particularly interesting piece of information drop.

As GSNews reported (via Heroic Hollywood), Yates confirmed that the second Fantastic Beasts story has already been written and ideas for a third are being kicked around by author J.K. Rowling.

We’ve done the first one, she’s written the second one, she’s got ideas for the third one. No one quite has ownership of them quite yet, in terms of having a relationship with the material, other than the relationship they’ll have with the movie when it comes out.

Even knowing very little about the forecasts for the upcoming Fantastic Beasts film, it seems almost impossible that Warner Bros. would not be interested in more stories in the Harry Potter universe. The lowest earning Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, still grossed almost $250 million at the international box office. Even assuming that some of the original Harry Potter fans would age out of the franchise, an entire new generation of fans — as well as the odd Colin Farrell devotee such as myself — will likely help ensure that Harry Potter becomes the Warner Bros. answer to Marvel and Star Wars.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them opens on Wednesday, November 16.
