We knew that the remnants of a tropical disturbance would be raising the chances of rain over a very parched Deep East Texas.  For the most part, those chances of rain were about 50-60%.  That means forecasters believed that in that you basically had a 50-50 shot at getting some measurable rainfall during the forecasted period.

Well, it looks like a case of feast or famine when it comes to who has been getting the rain.  Friday brought some scattered showers throughout the Pineywoods, but late last night and throughout the morning hours today (Saturday) the downpours have been concentrating on areas from southern Cherokee to northern Nacogdoches to southern Rusk to northwestern Shelby to Panola Counties.

In fact, the National Weather Service in Shreveport has issued a Flash Flood Warning for those previously mentioned counties until 12:45 this afternoon.  I was taking a look at some of the rainfall totals at various data stations as reported by wunderground.com.  Let's take a look:

  • Mt. Enterprise - 5.28
  • Cushing - 4.32
  • Gary - 4.42
  • Ponta - 4.63
  • Union Springs (North Nac County) - 1.73
  • Garrison - 2.08

In many of these areas, the heavy downpours continue.  On one hand, this is great news for these portions of East Texas, many of which are under a burn ban.  On the other, this much rain in a short period of time can cause dangerous situations, especially in flood-prone areas.  Regardless of that, this will be welcome for many ponds and area lakes that have been steadily dropping throughout the summer.

The latest forecast continues to show a 60% chance of showers for the Pineywoods.  Then, the spigot gets turned off as we return to very hot conditions beginning Sunday.
