According to a release from the Nacodgoches Sheriff's Department, a traffic stop on highway 59 has resulted in the seizure of numerous drugs by Nacogdoches County Deputies. 

Law enforcement officials stopped a white Jeep for a traffic violation around 2:30 am Tuesday morning. Upon approaching the vehicle, deputies could smell the odor of marijuana, which the driver admitted to having smoking before being stopped.  The driver identified himself, but deputies would later find out that the driver had given a false name.

Deputies started conducting a probable cause search of the vehicle and located two bottles of codeine in the back floor board. Deputies approached the driver to place him into custody for the drugs, and the driver fled on foot. The suspect crossed both lanes of traffic on highway 59 and two deputies gave chase. The suspect was apprehended without incident and transported to the Nacogdoches County Jail.

Deputies removed Hall from the back seat of the patrol unit at the jail and found two more packages of drugs that Hall had attempted to hide. The first packaged weighed 165 grams and field tested positive for Heroin. The other package contained a large amount of Ecstasy pills that weighed 110 grams.

Once inside the jail another search of the suspect was conducted where officers found a small plastic baggie of marijuana. The suspect,  Joe L. Harper II from Memphis, Tennessee was charged with Two counts of Manufacturing or Delivery of a controlled substance 1st felony, Possession of a controlled substance a 3rd felony, Possession of a controlled substance State Jail felony, Prohibited Substance in a correctional Facility 3rd felony,  evading arrest or detention state jail felony, and failure to identify.

Sheriff Bridges stated that this is the Sheriff Office second seizure of heroin in the last couple of months and this drug appears to becoming popular again, especially in the northern states. This is a powerful drug and is as dangerous as it gets.

These drugs have appeared too been destined for Memphis, Tennessee, where the suspect is from. But the Sheriff Office has already worked investigations in Nacogdoches County which Heroin was involved. Just a few weeks ago, the sheriff office worked a death investigation due to a Heroin Overdose in Nacogdoches County.

Sheriff Bridges encourages all families to speak to their youth about the dangers of drugs, and the health effects of using them, especially drugs such as Heroin as its popularity continue to rise.

Joe Harper has been booked into the Nacogdoches County Jail and bond has been set on all charges at $181,000.00 dollars.
