When it comes to my 2005 Chevy Silverado 1500 Z-71, I'm pretty much on par with the majority of drivers across the nation.

As the average age of vehicles has been steadily climbing over the past few years, according to a new report, the average age of cars and trucks on the road is 11.5 years old.

Yes, my truck has a cassette and CD player and not a fancy infotainment system, but I'm satisfied with it! But I can't tell you how long ago though its been that I've actually used the cassette player. We purchased my truck in September of 2004 and I recently put my 100,000th mile on it, too.

According to a new report from IHS, "The combined average age of all light vehicles on the road in the U.S. remained steady at 11.4 years, based on a snapshot of vehicles in operation taken Jan. 1 of this year."

It seems we're holding on to our vehicles a bit longer because they're more reliable over all. Alternatively though, a lot of cars on the road are not equipped with the latest safety features or integration features that are offered by newer vehciles.

This year marks the first year since this type of data has been published that the average age of both cars and light trucks are the same. Cars usually have a lower average age than trucks, but because reliability has improved so has the age of the average car.
