Jennifer Lopez Asked to Quit Fiat Gig Amid Rumors of Terrorist Links

Oh no, J. Lo! Jennifer Lopez is under fire for Fiat once again, but this time the allegations are much more damaging than graffiti copyrights or being superimposed into the Bronx. An advocacy group is calling for the ‘Papi’ singer to drop her Fiat endorsement because of the automaker’s ties to Iran’s weapons program. Say what?!

The Huffington Post reports that the non-profit United Against Nuclear Iran (UANI) released an open letter to Lopez, urging her to cut ties with the Italian car company. A rep for UANI wrote, ”By endorsing Fiat, you are serving as a spokesperson for a company that freely does business with a regime that is developing an illegal nuclear weapons program, financing and sponsoring terrorist groups including al-Qaeda, has killed American and NATO soldiers and is recognized as one of the world’s leading human rights violators.” Whoa.

The ties come not directly from Fiat itself (which is what Lopez promotes), but from a Fiat subsidiary, Iveco. Iveco sells trucks in Iran, and some of these trucks may have been used to move weapons and “stage gruesome public executions.” That’s a big jump from just killin’ it on the floor.

UANI gave Lopez a Jan. 18 deadline to announce her decision to stick with or nix being the face of Fiat. UANI spokesman Nathan Carleton said that if she stays, ”This campaign will continue, and we have plans to continue highlighting [Lopez’s] involvement with Fiat if necessary.” UANI sent a similar letter to Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne to urge the company to stop trading with Iran, pointing out that Kia and Toyota have already done away with their deals with the troubled and troublesome nation.

To be fair, we highly doubt that J. Lo was aware of the ties to terrorism, especially since Fiat’s direct name wasn’t associated with the allegations, but rather Iveco’s. Lopez simply has the most recognizable face to attach to UANI’s cause.

Considering she’s a judge of a show called ‘American Idol‘ — a beacon of pop culture democracy — we think it’s safe to leave J to the L-O off any F-to-the-B-I watch lists.
