The People's Republic of China's government might have banned hip-hop culture from TV but that won't stop Johnny Depp's new Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G. thriller, City of Lies, from being released in movie theaters across the world.

On Wednesday (May 9), the folks at The Hollywood Reporter announced that Beijing-based film studio Sweet Charm Pictures copped the rights to the film to release in China. The film company bought the rights to the movie from Lionsgate on the first day of the Cannes Film Market in Cannes, France (May 8).

The movie focuses on former Los Angeles Police Department Detective Russell Poole's multi-layered investigation into the murders of Tupac and Biggie. Poole will be played by Depp.

Global Road Entertainment plans to release the film, which also features Forest Whitaker, in the U.S. on Sept. 7, and are now trying to find a release date for China. Obviously, it hasn't been set yet, but it feels safe to say it's coming.

This news arrives a few days after it was reported that Depp attacked a film crew member on the set of the movie, which used to be titled LAbyrinthAccording to sources with inside information on the situation, the trouble started when Johnny had his two friends assume two roles in the movie.

“Johnny’s friends were in the scene, and it just turned into way more than it should have been,” said the source.

Depp himself has yet to comment on the matter.
