Lady Gaga will be dropping the ball in 2012. And no, we don’t mean dropping the proverbial ball on her career or her love life.

She will literally push the Waterford Crystal button that causes the ball in Times Square to drop at 11:59PM each year on New Year’s Eve. Being that Gaga is a native New Yorker, this is a major honor that has been bestowed upon the hometown girl done good.

According to the New York Post, Gaga was personally selected by Mayor Michael Bloomberg to serve as his special guest who pushes the button for the final minute of the year. Previous button pushers include politicos like Bill and Hillary Clinton, Colin Powell and former Manhattan mayor Rudy Giuliani. So the Mother Monster is in good company. She is also one of the most famous citizens of the Big Apple, so it’s only right that she gets to do the deed.

Gaga will already be in Times Square as part of the ‘Dick Clark New Year’s Rockin’ Eve’ special with Ryan Seacrest as she closes the book on what was the best year of her still young career.
