Louis Tomlinson performed his debut single as a solo artist, "Just Hold On," for the first time in the U.S. last night (January 24) on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

The former One Direction singer took the late-night stage alongside collaborator Steve Aoki -- who worked with Tomlinson on the upbeat track -- to deliver a high-energy performance just a month after first debuting the song live onstage during the X Factor UK finale in December.

That performance came just days after the death of Tomlinson's mother, Johannah Deakin, who passed away after a battle with cancer.

The "History" singer opened up for the first time about losing his mother during an interview with SiriusXM's Hits 1 in Hollywood, saying she encouraged him to stay in the music industry even when he felt like giving up.

"At first…it’s not something that I feel 100% comfortable talking too much about, but just quickly, when I first found out about the news I kind of did want to throw the towel in,” Tominson said. “But it was my mum who said to me that I’ve just got to keep going. She told me very sternly that she wanted me to.”

“So I’m not doing it for her, but…we’re doing it for each other,” he continued.
