Last Sunday afternoon my daughter came up with the idea to do something nice for her mom by making her a homemade funnel cake. When my daughter and her friend approached me with this idea, they had to reveal the nice gesture in her room. I walked into her room and there it was written out in dry erase marker on the glass top of her white desk, the recipe for home-made funnel cakes! Complete with the how-to YouTube video that they researched online.

I figured what the heck, let's give this a try. Had I realized what was about to happen after making the delicious fair dessert, I might have changed my mind.

The girls went to the kitchen got the eggs, flour, milk, powdered sugar and other ingredients ready for their creation. Once the batter was mixed I put the oil on the stove and heated it up. When it got to 375 degrees it was time to create the special surprise for her mom.

However, mom realized what was going on and came to see me make the very first one, which turned out to be pretty darn good! It was really quick though, because that dough cooked pretty fast in the hot oil. It was pretty simple -- pour the dough in, watch it turn golden brown, flip it over and repeat. We had enough batter to make about four of these fair staples complete with powdered sugar!

The only thing that I would've changed would be the oil, I think it got too hot and the residual smoke was really burning my eyes, so the next time I do this it'll probably be outdoors also because the house smelled like funnel cake and oil for two more days.

Below is the video of me making the last funnel cake. Once I perfected the art of flipping it over, I had to video it! I'm not going to show you my mistakes!

If you know of something quick, fun and easy like this to prepare with the kids and for anyone let me know, send me the recipe or video to luckylarry@townsquaremedia.com.
