A local soldier will be forever remembered now as his name goes up on the Lufkin Armed Forces Reserve center.

The center officially got its new name Monday afternoon, in honor of Lufkin native and veteran Staff Sergeant John. H. Taylor.

Taylor was released from active duty in 1945, but not before being honored with the Silver Star and the Bronze Star for valor during World War II.

The Lufkin City council came up with the idea of naming the center after a local veteran, and a search committee zoned in on the names of qualified local veterans. KTRE reports the Armed Forces Reserve Center serves as a training center for 400 National Guard and Army Reserve Soldiers.

Staff Sergeant Taylor died in 2007 at the age of 89, at his home in Lufkin.
