Wednesday morning, the Lufkin Police Department released the names of those involved in a fatal, two-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday morning on Loop 287 at Martin Luther King Drive.

Juanita Hernandez, 56, of Lufkin, was pronounced dead at the scene by Pct. 1 Justice of the Peace Billy Ball. She was riding passenger in a gold, 1999 Pontiac car driven by Armando Zamora, 59, of Lufkin. Their vehicle was struck after Zamora failed to yield the right of way while crossing the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive to a westbound 2001 Toyota Tacoma driven by Dee Mark Alan, 27, of Center.

Zamora was taken by medical helicopter to East Texas Medical Center in Tyler with unknown injuries and as of 9 a.m. Wednesday, remained there in the intensive care unit.

Alan was taken to CHI St. Luke’s Memorial Health - Lufkin, with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

This is the second fatality crash in less than a week at that same intersection.  A 22-year-old woman was killed in a crash near the Ellen Trout Zoo entrance on Friday evening.
