The Lufkin Police Department is investigating an incident in which a man attempted to rob a Kurth Drive Dollar General Store and assaulted a clerk with a hammer Sunday night. 

According to a release by Lufkin Police, the incident happened around 8:50 p.m., when the man walked into the store with a hammer in his hand. He then jumped on top of the counter and told a store clerk to open the safe, to which the clerk replied that he could not and he would have to get his manager. The suspect jumped off the counter and hit the clerk in the head with the hammer before running out of the store.

The clerk suffered a large, swollen area on his head from where he was hit with the hammer. He was checked out by paramedics at the scene and opted to have his mother take him to the hospital.

The clerk described the suspect as a black male, slender build and 6 foot tall, wearing a red mask, blue bandana and black hoodie with gray pants.
