Naya Rivera is gearing up for the release of her forthcoming memoir Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up. In it, she maintains total transparency, revealing for the first time that she had an abortion in 2010 while working on FOX series Glee.

Rivera — who discovered she was pregnant with actor Ryan Dorsey’s child weeks after the couple initially split -- chose to terminate her pregnancy to focus on her career.

The Devious Maids actress says she decided against telling Dorsey — who she later married in 2014, and had a baby boy with in 2015 — about the pregnancy. The actress had the procedure during her “one day off from filming an episode of Glee,” according to PEOPLE.

"It was very scary to open up about everything,” Rivera told the site about writing her memoir. "It's not something a lot of people talk about, but I think they should. I know some people might read it and say, 'What the Hell?' But I hope someone out there gets something out of it."

The actress also opened up about her past struggles with anorexia, noting it wasn't until writing Sorry Not Sorry that she fully understood the magnitude of her eating disorder.

"I was so young and it just seemed to be the norm. Everyone was going through similar stuff," she tells PEOPLE. "I had no way of knowing if I was going through it worse. I was juggling my feelings and it makes me sad that there are girls still going through that 15 years after I went through it."

Shortly after excerpts from her book began circulating online, Rivera responded to criticism from those who took issue with her revelations.

"I set out to write a book that was true to myself and would hopefully help others along the way. Media will always distort anything,”she tweeted. "I hope that you all enjoy my story and respect my good intentions in sharing them with you."

Sorry Not Sorry: Dreams, Mistakes and Growing Up will hit shelves on September 13.
