TV superheroes are everywhere these days, so leave it to NBC to attempt a new spin on DC’s greatest titans. Superhero office comedy Powerless has officially been granted a series order, along with first photos of the DC Comics-adjacent sitcom starring Vanessa Hudgens.

The single-camera series is described as an Office-type comedy without any actual superheroes, set at “one of the worst insurance companies in America — with the twist being that it also takes place in the universe of DC Comics. The show is about the reality of working life for a normal, powerless person in a world of superheroes and villains.”

Following its series order, NBC gave an updated synopsis:

It’s when [Hudgens’ character] stands up to one of these larger-than-life figures (after an epic battle messes with her commute) that she accidentally becomes a cult ‘hero’ in her own right … even if it’s just to her group of lovably quirky co-workers. Now, while she navigates her normal, everyday life against an explosive backdrop, Emily might just discover that being a hero doesn’t always require superpowers.

Firefly favorite Alan Tudyk will play Del, Emily (Hudgens)’s superior, as well as the company owner’s son and “a power-mad disastrous dictator of a boss,” while Community alum Danny Pudi will play Teddy, Emily’s best work friend, trusted confidante and office prankster. Christina Kirk will play Jackie, superhero fan and assistant to Tudyk’s Del, buckling under the pressure.

A to Z alum Ben Queen will shepherd the series, executive producing with pilot director Michael Patrick Jann. We’ll hear more from upfronts, but what should we make of Powerless by the photos?
