New Movie Releases: January 2016

You’re still preoccupied with Star Wars, but you guys do realize there are other movies hitting theaters, right? We’re just a couple of weeks away from a new year and a new month filled with new releases, including the expansion of The Hateful Eight, a handful of chilly horror flicks, big action, and the return of Kung Fu Panda. Get an early start on 2016 with our guide to January’s new movie releases.

January 1

The Hateful Eight (Nationwide): Directed by Quentin Tarantino. Starring Kurt Russell, Samuel L. Jackson and Jennifer Jason Leigh. In post-Civil War Wyoming, bounty hunters try to find shelter during a blizzard but get involved in a plot of betrayal and deception. Will they survive?

January 5

Sherlock: The Abominable Bride: Directed by Douglas Mackinnon. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman and Amanda Abbington. Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson find themselves in 1890s London in this holiday special.

January 8

The Forest: Directed by Jason Zada. Starring Natalie Dormer, Taylor Kinney and Yukiyoshi Ozawa. An unexplained horror occurs in a Japanese forest.

Yosemite: Directed by Gabrielle Demeestere. Starring James Franco, Henry Hopper and Barry Del Sherman. It’s the fall of 1985. The intertwining tales of three fifth grade friends, Chris, Joe and Ted, unfold in the suburban paradise of Palo Alto, as the threat of a mountain lion looms over the community.

Anesthesia (Limited): Directed by Tim Blake Nelson. Starring Kristen Stewart, Sam Waterston and Glenn Close. Multiple lives intersect in the aftermath of the violent mugging of a Columbia University philosophy professor.

January 15

13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi: Directed by Michael Bay. Starring John Krasinski, Max Martini and Pablo Schreiber. An American Ambassador is killed during an attack at a U.S. compound in Libya as a security team struggles to make sense out of the chaos.

The 5th Wave: Directed by J. Blakeson. Starring Chloe Moretz, Maika Monroe and Liev Schreiber. Four waves of increasingly deadly alien attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother.

The Lady in the Van: Directed by Nicholas Hytner. Starring Maggie Smith, Alex Jennings and Dominic Cooper. A man forms an unexpected bond with a transient woman living in her car that’s parked in his driveway.

Ride Along 2: Directed by Tim Story. Starring Ice Cube, Kevin Hart and Olivia Munn. As his wedding day approaches, Ben heads to Miami with his soon-to-be brother-in-law James to bring down a drug dealer who’s supplying the dealers of Atlanta with product.

Band of Robbers (Limited): Directed by Aaron and Adam Nee. Starring Kyle Gallner, Adam Nee and Matthew Gray Gubler. Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn are grown men, still searching for the hidden treasure that has eluded them since childhood.

The Benefactor (Limited): Directed by Andrew Renzi. Starring Richard Gere, Dakota Fanning and Theo James. A philanthropist meddles in the lives of newly-married couples in an attempt to relive his past.

Norm of the North (Limited): Directed by Trevor Wall. Starring Rob Schneider, Heather Graham and Bill Nighy. Displaced from their Arctic home, a polar bear named Norm and his three lemming friends wind up in New York City, where Norm becomes the mascot of a corporation he soon learns is tied to the fate of his homeland.

Remember (Limited): Directed by Atom Egoyan. Starring Christopher Plummer, Martin Landau and Dean Norris. With the aid of a fellow Auschwitz survivor and a hand-written letter, an elderly man with dementia goes in search of the person responsible for the death of his family.

January 22

The Boy: Directed by William Brent Bell. Starring Lauren Cohan, Rupert Evans and Ben Robson. An American nanny is shocked that her new English family’s boy is actually a life-sized doll. After violating a list of strict rules, disturbing events make her believe that the doll is really alive.

Dirty Grandpa: Directed by Dan Mazer. Starring Robert De Niro, Zac Efron and Julianne Hough. Right before his wedding, an uptight guy is tricked into driving his grandfather, a perverted former Army general, to Florida for spring break.

London Has Fallen: Directed by Babak Najafi. Starring Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman and Aaron Eckhart. In London for the Prime Minister’s funeral, Mike Banning discovers a plot to assassinate all the attending world leaders.

Risen: Directed by Kevin Reynolds. Starring Joseph Fiennes, Cliff Curtis and Tom Felton. Follows the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of a non-believer. Clavius, a powerful Roman Military Tribune, and his aide Lucius, are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Jesus in the weeks following the crucifixion, in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.

Exposed (Limited / VOD): Directed by Declan Dale. Starring Keanu Reeves, Ana De Armas and Mira Sorvino. After witnessing a miracle, a young Latina woman experiences strange things as a police detective searches for the truth behind his partner’s death.

Mojave (Limited): Directed by William Monahan. Starring Oscar Isaac, Garrett Hedlund and Mark Wahlberg. A suicidal artist goes into the desert, where he finds his doppelgänger, a homicidal drifter.

Synchronicity (Limited / VOD): Directed by Jacob Gentry. Starring Chad McKnight, A.J. Bowen and Michael Ironside. A physicist invents a machine that creates wormholes, but when a mysterious woman enters his life he begins to uncover some startling secrets as his paranoia grows.

January 29

Fifty Shades of Black: Directed by Michael Tiddes. Starring Marlon Wayans, Jane Seymour and Kali Hawk. Wayans’ latest spoof tackles Fifty Shades of Grey.

The Finest Hours: Directed by Craig Gillespie. Starring Chris Pine, Ben Foster and Eric Bana. The Coast Guard makes a daring rescue attempt off the coast of Cape Cod after a pair of oil tankers are destroyed during a blizzard in 1952.

Jane Got a Gun: Directed by Gavin O’Connor. Starring Natalie Portman, Joel Edgerton and Ewan McGregor. A woman asks her ex-lover for help in order to save her outlaw husband from a gang out to kill him.

Kung Fu Panda 3: Directed by Alessandro Carloni and Jennifer Yuh. Starring Jack Black, Angelina Jolie and Dustin Hoffman. Continuing his “legendary adventures of awesomeness,” Po must face two hugely epic, but different threats: one supernatural and the other a little closer to his home.
