Another month, another trailer about talking animated animals. The latest in this category is Rock Dog, a movie about a Tibetan Mastiff who would rather be a musician than guard his herd of sheep. It’s a Chinese-American production based on the Chinese graphic novel Tibetan Rock Dog by Zheng Jun. The animation style looks a little simplistic until you really take a closer look to see the details like fur and grass and dust on a wool hat.

It feels more than a little like a poor man‘s Kung Fu Panda, but the cast is pretty stacked. Luke Wilson voices the protagonist Bodi alongside J.K. Simmons as his father Khampa, Lewis Black as nefarious wolf Linnux, Kenan Thompson, Mae Whitman, Jorge Garcia, Matt Dillon, Sam Elliott as Fleetwood Yak, and Eddie Izzard as cooler-than-thou musical cat Angus Scattergood. Bodi leaves home to follow his music-making dreams, while a pack of wolves menaces his family during his absence. Can Bodi save his family and his sheep from the wolves without giving up on the beat? Only time will tell.

Here’s the official synopsis:

When a radio falls from the sky into the hands of a wide-eyed Tibetan Mastiff, he leaves home to fulfill his dream of becoming a musician, setting into motion a series of completely unexpected events. ROCK DOG opens in theaters February 24, 2017 starring Luke Wilson (Bodi), Eddie Izzard (Angus), J.K. Simmons (Khampa), Lewis Black (Linnux), Kenan Thompson (Riff), Mae Whitman (Darma), Jorge Garcia (Germur), with Matt Dillon (Trey) and Sam Elliott (Fleetwood Yak).

Directed by Ash Brannon, who worked on Toy Story and Over the Hedge, Rock Dog hits theaters February 2017.
