Once again, The CW is looking to revive one of its most iconic properties. This time around it’s the aliens among us, both figurative and literal, as an immigration-themed Roswell reboot is in development from an Originals alum.

According to Variety, the new Roswell will represent another take on Melinda Metz’s Roswell High books, as written and executive produced by The Originals and Flash writer Carina Adly MacKenzie. The new take would presumably follow continuity independent of the three-season cult favorite, while the logline adds a timely immigration focus:

The new, one-hour drama series would follow the daughter of undocumented immigrants who reluctantly returns to her tourist-trap hometown of Roswell, New Mexico. There she discovers a shocking truth about her teenage crush who is now a police officer: he’s an alien who has kept his unearthly abilities hidden his entire life. She protects his secret as the two reconnect and begin to investigate his origins, but when a violent attack and long-standing government cover-up point to a greater alien presence on Earth, the politics of fear and hatred threaten to expose him and destroy their deepening romance.

The original Roswell ran from 1999 through 2002, and featured among its cast UnREAL star Shiri Appleby, Katherine Heigl, Colin Hanks, William Sadler and more. It was developed by Friday Night Lights alum Jason Katims and executive produced by Star Trek: The Next Generation veteran Jonathan Frakes.

It’s early yet, but was Roswell due for a return? Stay tuned for the latest on The CW’s reboot.
