Emi Lane one of the female Maasai Giraffes at the Ellen Trout Zoo died early Tuesday morning.

She had fallen from an unknown cause in her stall on Monday afternoon and was unable to stand in spite of the heroic effort on behalf of Zoo staffers to provide assistance to her. A necropsy performed by the Zoo’s veterinarian revealed that the cause of death was acute cardiac arrest.

Emi Lane was one of the first two Giraffes to call the Ellen Trout Zoo home. She arrived at the Zoo on 6 June 1999 and gave birth to six calves. Emi Lane was sixteen years old. In the video you can see one of the births happen.

Given Giraffes live around 15-25 years (accounts vary) this was very unexpected I am sure.
