‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Reveals First Official Photo, ‘Terrifying’ Vulture Details

First things first: You’re probably going to want to stay up a little past your usual bedtime tonight to check out the first full trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming, which is set to premiere on Jimmy Kimmel Live!. We’ll have the trailer up around the same time along with our own thoughts, but until then, Sony and Marvel have revealed the first official image from their collaborative reboot effort, along with a few new story details and some intel on Michael Keaton’s villainous Vulture — he’s like Birdman, but scarier, somehow.

USA Today debuted the new photo (below), featuring Tom Holland’s Peter Parker / Spider-Man standing near some tracks as a train whooshes past, looking somewhat pensive:

It’s not much, but it’s something to hold you over until the trailer premieres later tonight. In addition to the photo, USA Today has some new plot details from Holland, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige, director Jon Watts, and Homecoming co-producer Eric Hauserman Caroll — who describes Parker’s state of mind following Civil War:

He literally just went to Europe with the coolest clique of them all, and now he’s back with the academic decathlon and the mathletes and going, ‘What am I doing here?’

Holland adds that this iteration of Spidey is “not the finished article”; he’s a kid who makes “massive mistakes” and tries to learn from them. He’s also trying to impress Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.), and discovering that the suit his benefactor gave him has all kinds of features. Feige says it “can do a lot more than he even realizes right now” — maybe that’s where those web wings come in.

As for Vulture, Holland describes Michael Keaton’s villain as something a bit more scary than you might have assumed:

The first time we see the Vulture is terrifying. It’s like a horror movie: really scary, very intense and shocking.

There have been rumors of potential additional villains in Homecoming — or at least characters who eventually become villains in the Spidey universe. Says Watts:

It’s fun to think that if Spider-Man is a regular kid who becomes a superhero, there’s got to be a bunch of regular guys who become supervillains, too.

The film co-stars Zendaya as Michelle, Marisa Tomei as Aunt May, Jacob Batalon as Peter’s BFF Ned Leeds, Tony Revolori as Flash Thompson and Laura Harrier as Liz Allan. The reboot also features a great ensemble of grown-up actors, including Hannibal Buress, Donald Glover and Kenneth Choi.

Spider-Man: Homecoming hits theaters on July 7, 2017.
