Regis Philbin made good on his promise, and on a $10 bet with Katie Couric, that he wouldn’t cry as he bade farewell to Live! With Regis and Kelly in a star-packed studio in New York City on Friday. Philbin closed the show, and this chapter of his career, by thanking his fans for “these great years together” and telling them, “I hope I see you again real soon." "

For the record, Couric -- who made the bet during a Nightline interview with him, and who was seated among the other stars in the audience -- cried...a lot.

Philbin, who holds the record for the most time on the air at 16,780 hours and has been a fixture on television for half a century, hosted Live! for 28 years, including 15 beside Kathie Lee Gifford, who was in an audience filled with friends, family, and famous fans.
