What Marvel Got Right About Spider-Man That His Solo Movies Got Wrong

Oh what a different 18 months makes. A year ago, last fall Spider-Man fans were facing an entire universe of Spidey movies they didn’t particularly want; a third Amazing Spider-Man about the continuing and not-particularly-exciting adventures of Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker, plus spinoff movies for Venom and the Sinister Six. Things got so bad for Spider-Man that when rumors began circulating that Sony was considering an Aunt May movie, Sony had to publicly dismiss those rumors as “silly” with “no validity whatsoever” because people thought that the company that made Amazing Spider-Man 2 might actually be dumb enough to make an Aunt May movie.

Disney and Marvel Threaten to Boycott Georgia Over Anti-Gay Legislation

In the past, many Marvel movies like Avengers and Age of Ultron filmed in Pinewood Studios in London, but with the opening of Pinewood’s new studio in Atlanta, Georgia (and the generous tax incentives that come along with filming in the state), many Marvel productions like Captain America: Civil War and Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 have moved down to the ATL. Marvel has plans to shoot a number of their upcoming productions in Atlanta, including Avengers: Infinity War, but that could change if Georgia signs into law House Bill 757, the “religious liberty” act, that would allow organizations to deny services or fire employees who are gay.

‘Deadpool’ Director’s Cut Will Include Extra Footage, Will Be ‘Even More Raw’

Deadpool will be the first R-rated Marvel movie since 2008’s Punisher: War Zone; it was officially rated R by the MPAA for “strong violence and language throughout, sexual content and graphic nudity.” Pretty intense stuff for a superhero movie! But, if you need your Deadpool to get even more intense, star T.J. Miller says there is a planned Director’s Cut of the film that will be “even more raw” than what you see in theaters.

‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Will Be ‘Totally Different’ From the Last Two ‘Thor’ Films

Many fans seem to agree that the Thor films are the weaker installments in the MCU, which should make Marvel president Kevin Feige’s latest comments about Thor: Ragnarok seem fairly promising. For starters, Feige says the new sequel will be “totally different” from its predecessors, and you shouldn’t expect the mighty thunder god to spend much time hanging out on Earth.

How ‘Jessica Jones’ and ‘Carol’ Brilliantly Reverse an Outdated Formula

The Bechdel test has long been a barometer for the quality and prevalence of female characters in fiction, often cited when we discuss the discrepancy of women in meaningful roles in film and television. In a superficial sense, Jessica Jones and Carol don’t have much in common — aside from strong women in leading roles, thoughtful narratives and fantastic performances — yet both of these stories not only serve as living and breathing examples of earning an A+ on the Bechdel test, but of going a step further by defying the basic, antiquated conventions that necessitated the test in the first place.
