The Lufkin Police Department is asking residents to be on the lookout for a man in a white van following suspicious activity involving a teenage girl Monday morning.

According to a police report, th e Department took a report from a 15-year-old girl of a suspicious man in a white van this morning in North Lufkin. The girl told officers she was waiting at a bus stop off Keltys Street near Weaver Avenue around 7:30 a.m., when the Hispanic man who appeared to be 20-30 years old, stopped and asked her if she needed a ride. She told him “no” but he asked her again.

After telling the man “no” a second time, the girl said, he drove away but made a block and then came by to ask a third time. That, the girl said, is when she pulled out her cell phone and photographed him. He then sped away. The girl said she did not know the man, but that she believes she has seen him driving around her neighborhood before.

“This man may not have had ill intentions toward the girl, but we believe any parent would find his behavior to be concerning,” Public Relations Specialist Jessica Pebsworth said. “We applaud the girl for her quick thinking in getting a photo of him, which resulted in him leaving her alone.”

Anyone with information concerning this person of interest, or if you see this vehicle, you are asked to contact the Lufkin Police Department at (936)639-TIPS (8477).

The Department urges parents to discuss with their children safety precautions like being aware of their surroundings at all times or using the buddy system, especially as children may find themselves without adult supervision more during the summer months.
