You Have to Read the Full List of ‘The Good Place’ Food Pun Restaurants
They say puns are the lowest form of comedy, but the charming stupidity of food puns may have been perfected by The Good Place. The NBC comedy made rapid-fire sight gags of joke eateries in Thursdays latest, and writers now share a heavenly master list you can’t escape chuckling at.
You’ll want to skip this paragraph if you’re not caught up on The Good Place Season 1, but Thursday’s “Dance Dance Resolution” took full advantage of Michael (Ted Danson)’s many reboots of the faux “Good Place” neighborhood, switching up restaurants with one food pun after another. There were highs of “Biscotti Pippen” and “Lasagna Come Out Tomorrow,” but the (abridged!) pitch list from writer Megan Amram is truly a sight to behold:

Of course, some of those made the final cut, but were only included in brief background glimpses. There was the La La Land-themed “Ziti of Stars,” “You Do the Hokey Gnocchi and You Eat Yourself Some Food,” “Knish From a Rose” and “Ponzu Scheme,” but we were sadly deprived of “Linguine Manuel-Miranda,” or “The Maize From Westworld.”
Creator Mike Schur also previously spoke to Vulture about Amram’s nigh-unholy talent for puns:
I actually think, no joke, her brain is like the computer in Lost where if you didn’t enter the code and press enter every like 100 minutes or whatever else, the world would end. That’s Megan’s brain with puns. If Megan doesn’t make a pun every 37 minutes, her brain will overheat and her head will explode and she’ll die. That’s the only possible explanation for how many puns Megan makes out loud and on Twitter every day. […]
Megan, in that section of the script, included a giant paragraph full of puns for different kind of names of different kinds of ethnic restaurants. I think it went on for six or seven pages. It just went on and on and on. Partially she was doing it to lean into her stereotype as a person who loves puns. But also, it was just straight-up impressive … She’s not the only person on the staff who makes those jokes, but she’s certainly the Willie Mays of making those jokes. She’s the best one on the staff. Anytime you see something like that, the chances are pretty good that Megan is the one who came up with it. If she were in the X-Men, her superpower would be making puns.
The Good Place Season 2 is only just getting started, but how will Eleanor, Chidi, Jason and Tahani escape their eternal pun-ishment? I’ll see myself out, thank you.
