If you’re like me, you probably watched the first trailer for The Layover and thought, “Huh, they’re doing comedy?” The movie offers a strange mix of talent both behind and in front of the camera. William H. Macy isn’t exactly the first name that comes to mind when you think of raunchy sex comedy directors, nor are Lance Krall and David Hornsby household names as writers, but when you look at their combined track records the past few years – a whole bunch of Shameless and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – the pieces for humor are most definitely there.
That’s one reason The Layover may stand above the countless independent comedies that hit the VOD market. The other reason is the film’s pair of leading ladies. While Alexandra Daddario might not be a household name yet, the almost-success of Baywatch means she’s poised for a breakout, and fans who have been watching her gamely rise up through the indie film ranks over the past decade are no-doubt enjoying her prolific summer.
And then there’s Kate Upton. Between this and 2014’s The Other Woman, Upton is following a tried and true method of transitioning from a modeling career to a career as an actress. I’m old enough to remember when Cameron Diaz (her former costar) made the jump based on the strength of her comedic chops in The Mask; even if you think that The Layover looks like a cheaper spin on profane girl comedies like Rough Night, it’s the kind of role that could give Upton plenty of opportunities to poke fun at herself (and even a few chances to surprise with some dramatic work).
Here’s the full plot synopsis for The Layover:
When their airplane is rerouted due to a hurricane warning, two single female best friends find themselves competing for the same hot guy during an extended layover in St. Louis.
