Like it, love it or hate it, La La Land is continuing its major sweep of awards season, unsurprisingly. After winning a record-breaking seven Golden Globes on Sunday night, the Damien Chazelle romance musical has come out on top of the 2017 British Academy of Film and Television Awards with 11 nominations. The surprise of the BAFTA announcement though, was how few nominations two other Oscar frontrunners earned.

On top of La La Land, Kenneth Lonergan’s drama Manchester By the Sea and Barry Jenkins’ three-chapter tale Moonlight are the main films in contention for the top Oscar prize. You may expect those two films to closely follow Chazelle’s musical with BAFTA noms, but they only earned six and four nods, respectively. Instead two other films came out as BAFTA favorites, Denis Villeneuve’s Arrival and Tom Ford’s Nocturnal Animals, earning nine nominations each. Could either end up in the Best Picture Oscar race?

I have less hope for Nocturnal Animals‘ chances outside of the Supporting Actor race, despite that it’s been getting more noms than many of us expected. Arrival, though? The Amy Adams sci-fi film may just slip in to the Oscars top category if the Academy gives us more than five nominations. But then again, last year Carol led the BAFTA noms (along with Bridge of Spies), and we all know how the Academy treated that film.

Some notable BAFTA snubs included no love for Martin Scorsese’s Silence, which was also shut out of the Globes, or Paul Verhoeven’s Elle, which won Best Foreign Film at the Globes. Isabelle Huppert, who took home the Best Actress in a Drama Globe on Sunday was also snubbed and instead, Emily Blunt squeezed in as a Lead Actress nominee for The Girl on the Train. Denzel Washington’s name is nowhere to be seen on the noms list, snubbed for both Lead Actor and Best Director for Fences (the BAFTAs have some sense though, and nominated Viola Davis for Supporting). The 2017 BAFTAs take place on February 12 in London. Check out the full list of nominees below:
