A fourteen-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff's Office and former Nacogdoches Police Officer has passed away due to complications from COVID-19.

According to a Facebook Post from the Harris County Sheriff's Office, Juan Menchaca, 70, died Saturday after being hospitalized for several weeks.  He is the second Sheriff's Office employee to die after contracting COVID-19. Sergeant Raymond Scholwinski died of the virus on May 6.

In the Facebook post, Sheriff Ed Gonzalez issued the following statement:

"Deputy Menchaca was a beloved member of our Harris County Sheriff's Office family, and he will be terribly missed by all of us who had the honor of knowing him. I ask the entire community to lift up Deputy Menchaca, his wife, Melissa, and their entire family in their prayers. I also ask that we all honor him by continuing to do our part to stop the spread of this terrible virus."

In addition to the Nacogdoches Police Department, Menchaca was also employed as a Texas Parole Officer for 18 years. Funeral arrangements are pending and will be updated here.
