The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) has provided updated plans for the intersection of Lloyd Street and North Street in Nacogdoches. Two weeks ago, officials with TxDOT revealed that they were suspending plans to remove the traffic signal at this intersection, a few blocks north of SFA.

The decision to leave the signal in place was made based on input from Nacogdoches citizens, city officials, and stakeholders. Capital improvement projects, both in progress and planned at Stephen F. Austin State University, were also taken into consideration. Several common themes were apparent in the comments from both sides, including traffic safety, the impact on schools and surrounding businesses, pedestrian safety, and traffic flow.

Updated Plans For the Lloyd Street Intersection

Over the past few days, message boards have been placed before the intersection of Lloyd Street and North Street ahead of work to upgrade the signal and conduct a traffic study along the corridor.

On Monday, September 29, the existing signal will change to a flashing yellow caution light at North Street and a flashing red stop light at Lloyd Street. Drivers on Lloyd Street will be required to stop before traveling onto North Street, where cross traffic will not stop.

In early October, the signal at North Street and Lloyd Street will be removed while the
foundation and infrastructure for a new signal are established and upgraded to the current standards. A temporary stop sign will be placed on Lloyd Street. Officials with TxDOT report that there is not enough space in the right-of-way to install a new signal without removing the old one.

Installing the new signal will take approximately three months, after which point, a study will be conducted to analyze traffic patterns along the length of North Street/Business 59.
