We may be in the thick of high school football season in Texas, but varsity basketball is about two weeks away for many teams.

The Texas Association of Basketball Coaches (TABC) has already released its state rankings for girls' teams, including numerous teams from Deep East Texas.

Huntington Devilettes

In the 2023-24 season, Huntington made a historic run in the UIL basketball playoffs. The Devilettes advanced to the state championship game before falling in that title match in overtime to Shallowater.

The voters with the TABC believe that Huntington will once again have a strong team. The Devilettes are ranked 2nd in the state in Class 3A. Last year, Huntington was 36-7 on the year, and 13-1 in district.

By the way, last year's state champion, Shallowater, is ranked first in the state.

Tenaha Lady Tigers

Tenaha comes into the new season ranked 6th overall in the state in Class 2A. Last year, the Lady Tigers were perfect in district and finished with an overall record of 33-3. Tenaha advanced to the fourth round of the playoffs last year.

Douglass is ranked 12th in the state in Class 2A. Last year, they finished 27-7 on the year and had a perfect 11-0 district record. The went five rounds deep into the playoffs.

Brookeland Lady Wildcats

Last year, Brookeland finished first in district with a record of 14-0 and their overall record was 24-9. They went three rounds deep into the playoffs. It's hard to believe that they didn't make the top 25 to start the year.
