The latest Texas High School Coaches Association basketball rankings are out, and once again, quite a few teams from across the Pineywoods are getting due recognition.

As I was browsing through the rankings for the various conferences, something caught my attention in the Class 2A girl's ranking. That top 25 poll is stacked with numerous teams from the Deep East Texas area. When it comes to playoff time, the Pineywoods region is going to be one of the toughest in the state.

Chireno Lady Owls

They are no strangers to success when it comes to basketball, or to finding a lifesize elf.  As of this writing, they are ranked #4 with a record of 21-2. It should be noted that they continue to be one of the premier teams in Texas even though they made the jump from 1A to 2A.

Tenaha Lady Tigers

They are ranked #5 with a record of 21-2 as well. Tenaha made a deep run in the Class 2A playoffs last year and they look ready to make it to state this year.  However, it looks like a Chireno/Tenaha showdown will be a real possibility in the playoffs.

Dallardsville Big Sandy Lady Cats

The Lady Cats check in at #19 with a record of 19-3. Big Sandy is looking to claim another district championship this year, but they will be tested by Evadale who is currently ranked at #11 in the state.

Woden Lady Eagles

Woden is ranked #24 with a record of 15-6. The Lady Eagles look to be on the way to yet another playoff appearance, however, if they want to capture a district championship, they'll need to find a way to beat Chireno.

Timpson Lady Bears

Timpson is 12-5 on the year and 3-0 in district play. Given their impressive wins in non-district play, I believe they should be ranked in the top 25 of the state as well. Regardless, circle their upcoming two games against Tenaha as the showdowns that will decide who will be the district champ.

Lovelady Lions

Don't lose sight of this team.  They have a 10-14 record, which may not seem too impressive. However, they have played one of the toughest 2A non-conference schedules and they should make another deep run in the playoffs.

Douglass Lady Indians

Like Lovelady, they don't have a great non-conference record but remember two things about this team.  They have a history of making an impact in the playoffs and they are starting to get hot at the right time.
