Disney Casts Chinese Star Liu Yifei as ‘Mulan’ in Live-Action Remake
Earlier this year, we spoke with director Niki Caro about her upcoming reimagining of Mulan, one of many live-action remakes in the works at Disney. In light of the white-washing controversies surrounding films like Ghost in the Shell and Death Note, there has been some understandable concern among fans regarding Disney’s remake of their animated classic. But as Caro promised, the studio is committed to casting Chinese actors in the live-action update, and they’ve made good on their word (thus far) today by enlisting actress Liu Yifei (aka Crystal Liu) in the title role.
Jude Law Joins ‘Captain Marvel’ With Brie Larson
Leave it to Marvel to drop some awesome news on this sleepy Thanksgiving eve, and they’re definitely giving us all something to be thankful for: Jude Law has signed on to play the male lead opposite Brie Larson in Captain Marvel, which marks Larson’s big — and highly-anticipated — MCU debut. Depending on your particular feelings about such things, you may be disappointed or thrilled to learn that he won’t be playing her love interest.
Channing Tatum’s ‘Gambit’ Movie Adds Lizzy Caplan
It seems that Channing Tatum’s long-developing — and frequently delayed — Gambit movie is finally back in business. After losing two directors and his leading lady, Tatum took the X-Men spinoff back to the drawing board to re-develop the screenplay. With Fox’s X-Men universe quickly expanding following the success of Deadpool, it looks like the studio is ready to give Gambit the green light, and they’re eyeing Lizzy Caplan to join Tatum.
Phil Lord and Chris Miller Break Silence on Their Firing From ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’
Getting fired from the Han Solo spinoff wasn’t the first time Phil Lord and Chris Miller experienced creative heartbreak. Over the weekend, the filmmaking duo appeared at the Vulture Festival for a panel dedicated to their tragically short-lived series Clone High. During the Q&A, talk inevitably turned to Lord and Miller’s other, more recent career hiccup, with the pair finally — and gracefully — breaking their silence on the departure from the Star Wars universe.
What’s Expiring From Netflix: December 2017
Bad news, everyone: All 11 seasons of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia are leaving Netflix next month. Good news: There’s plenty of great stuff — including Baby Groot! — coming to the streaming service in December. But just as tons of new titles are added, so must several others expire. It is the streaming circle of life. And time is running out for you to catch up with these titles before they’re gone — possibly for good.
DC Fans Petition Warner Bros. to Release Zack Snyder Cut of ‘Justice League’
Zack Snyder had completed several months of work on Justice League when Joss Whedon came on board to write some additional scenes for the superhero ensemble. Unfortunately, Snyder had to step away from the film due to a family tragedy, leaving Whedon to oversee post-production. By Warner Bros.’ account, about a quarter of Justice League was reshot by Whedon, but it’s been heavily rumored that the Avengers director actually reshot something like 80 percent of the film. Now, following a disappointing opening weekend, DC fans are asking WB to release the Snyder cut of Justice League via a very misguided online petition.
Rumor: Matt Reeves Wants Jake Gyllenhaal for ‘The Batman’
Ever since Matt Reeves replaced Ben Affleck as director of The Batman, reports and rumors have persisted about the actor’s impending departure from the DCEU — fueled, in part, by Affleck himself, who recently said that he’s looking for a “cool way to segue out” of the franchise. According to the latest rumor, Reeves has his eye on another actor to potentially take on the role of the Dark Knight, should Affleck bow out after Justice League.
Sylvester Stallone Accused of Sexually Assaulting Teen Girl in 1980s
Allegations of sexual misconduct and assault continue to mount against Hollywood men and politicians in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal. Following this morning’s allegations against Senator Al Franken, another prominent and beloved figure has been accused of sexual assault: Sylvester Stallone. According to a recently unearthed police report, the iconic action star and his bodyguard allegedly raped a 16-year-old girl in the 1980s.
Cable Meets His Maker in This Great New ‘Deadpool 2’ Set Photo
It’s going to be a little while before we see the first trailer for Deadpool 2. In the meantime, if you’ve already breezed through the Merc With the Mouth’s special holiday issue of Good Housekeeping (no, seriously; it’s a thing), then you’re probably itching for more Deadpool content. Thankfully, there’s a pretty awesome new photo from the set of the upcoming sequel. And if you’re a comic book fan, you’ll particularly appreciate this one.
Two More Women Accuse Jeremy Piven of Sexual Assault as 2013 Allegation Resurfaces
You’d be forgiven if — somewhere between Harvey Weinstein, Brett Ratner, Kevin Spacey, and the numerous allegations of sexual harassment and assault leveled against them (and others) in recent weeks — you had forgotten about Jeremy Piven. The former Entourage star was previously accused of sexually assaulting a woman on the set of the HBO series. Over the last several days, two more women have come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct, while video footage of another woman accusing Piven of harassment in 2013 has resurfaced.
Louis C.K. Accused of Engaging in Sexual Misconduct With Five Women
This afternoon, the New York premiere of Louis C.K.’s upcoming film I Love You, Daddy was canceled amid reports that the New York Times was on the verge of publishing a major story about the comedian. That story is, as many suspected, a damning exposé on C.K.’s history of alleged sexual misconduct. Five women went on the record with the Times to share stories of uncomfortable encounters with C.K., the oldest of which dates back to the late ’90s.
First ‘Deadpool 2’ Poster Brings Everyone Together for Thanksgiving
When you gather ’round the table to shove turkey into your face with friends and loved ones, what will you give thanks for? Your career, your relationships, just being alive, or maybe the fact that a wild R-rated superhero movie starring Ryan Reynolds as a mouthy mercenary became such a massive hit that we’re actually getting a sequel. (Don’t say that. Your mom will be pissed.) In keeping with the Thanksgiving holiday spirit, the first poster for Deadpool 2 has arrived, and it’s fully prepped for turkey time.
