This post contains SPOILERS for Deadpool 2.

If it’s even possible, Deadpool 2 has even more irreverent and fourth-wall-breaking humor crammed into it than the first movie does, and when director David Leitch sat down in the editing room he was tasked with the unenviable job of picking which ones would stay in and which would have to go. Don’t worry, though, there are a few that will probably pop up on the Blu-ray somewhere.

Leitch spoke to Esquire about how tricky it was to keep the oddball tone of the movie while also telling a worthwhile, emotional story. Part of that was filing down a lot of the jokey bits.

When we got into post and we had to trim it down we started to have to have our own gut checks about what jokes are in and what jokes are out. There was a pretty close consensus for what should stay and what should go. Some of them we may see in different incarnations of the film or in the Blu-Ray, but we’re pretty happy with where it all landed.

The baby Hitler bit, which is teased in the movie itself, will probably be one of those things you’ll see on the home video version.

In the third act, there’s a scene with all of them in the apartment, and there’s a reference to [killing Hitler]. It was a discussion about how do we all feel about this in terms of what’s the last impression we want to leave with the audience. There are so many things that are working well at the end that you want to leave the audience with that impression. As much as I love this joke, we end on a really high note and that’s the way it should end.

There’s also a pretty incredible scene [and SPOILER warning for what follows, because it’s a big one] in which all of the members of the newly minted X-Force except Domino are dispatched one by one in ever more gruesome ways during their very first mission.

We went through great pains to bring in the right people and protect the scene from prying eyes, and build up the expectation in the right way so the joke would land when people are in the theater. I love it. This is the only type of movie you can do that in.

Peter, by the way, is just fine, and will probably be back.
