Katy Perry Aims for a Chart Record with ‘The One That Got Away’

It’s been more than 20 years since Michael Jackson set the record for most Number One singles from an album with his five chart-topping hits from ‘Bad.’ In fact, as the industry has splintered into niche marketplaces over the last decade and change, it’s looked like that record might stand forever.

It’s all the more impressive, then, that Katy Perry managed to duplicate Jackson’s feat earlier this year, when she notched her fifth Number One single from ‘Teenage Dream’ — and now she’s looking to move past the King of Pop in the history books as she releases the album’s sixth single, ‘The One That Got Away.’

Perry’s label serviced the song to Top 40 stations yesterday. “I’m so pleased to select ‘The One That Got Away’ as my sixth single because this song shows a very different side of me that I haven’t shown with my past singles on this record,” she said in a statement. “I think that everyone can relate to this song. I wrote (it) about when you promise someone forever, but you end up not being able to follow through.”

She added, “It’s a bittersweet story. Hopefully, the listener learns from hearing it and never has to say they had ‘The One’ get away.”

‘The One That Got Away’ follows ‘California Gurls,’ ‘E.T.,’ ‘Firework,’ ‘Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)’ and the album’s title track. Along the way, ‘Teenage Dream’ has been certified gold or platinum in seven countries, and Perry’s label, Capitol Records, thinks more copies are waiting to be purchased.

“If it goes to Number One, that would be great,” said label executive Greg Thompson about the new single. “If not, we still have a Katy song on the radio in the fourth quarter.”
