I have some nieces that participate in this East Texas tradition, and until now I really never knew where it all started.

After extensive traveling and helping families around the world begin a new tradition, Skippy Dimpledot the Christmas Elf on Tuesday returned to Lufkin’s Dunbar Primary, where the inspiration for his creation took place over a decade ago.

Margie and Claire Brody, the mother/daughter team from Lufkin who co-authored the Skippy Dimpledot books, visited Dunbar to introduce the magical elf to local primary students who attend the very school where the idea for Skippy arose.

“Claire was in second grade and her teacher Ms. (Cindy) Akeroyd had an elf named Stanley,” Margie said. “The kids would write Stanley letters and he would magically write them back.”

Margie said it was not long until her daughter wanted an elf of her own, and one morning an elf named Skippy Dimpledot appeared in Claire’s room. Claire would write letters to Skippy, and the “elf” would write her back. When Claire was in the fifth grade, she and her mom decided it would be fun to write a children’s book about Skippy and help spread the tradition to other families.

“I would love to continue this tradition with my kids,” Claire said. “It has meant something special to our family, and it continues to be a privilege to share the tradition with other people.”

Claire and Margie will be at Peavy Primary in Hudson on Thursday and will visit the Lufkin Fashion District at 2 p.m. Saturday.
