Celebrate Juneteenth This Weekend In Longview
The City of Longview is hosting its Juneteenth celebration this weekend and the community is invited!
Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration honoring the end of slavery in the United States. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger led thousands of federal troops to Galveston, Texas to announce that the Civil War had ended, and slaves had been freed.
To commemorate this event, the Longview Public Library is hosting a Facebook Live session today (June 19th) to give the history of "Juneteenth" and the importance of the state holiday. There will be books and literature to give more insight.
On Saturday (June 20th), all roads will lead to Broughton Park 801 S. Martin Luther King Jr. BLVD as Councilman Wray Wade hosts a Juneteenth Celebration and Solidarity March starting at 8:30 a.m.
Social distancing is encouraged and everyone is strongly encouraged to wear a mask.
For more details contact Councilman Wade at (903) 399-3200.
