City of Lufkin May Implement Emergency Mask Regulation on Monday

In the past week, there has been a significant spike of COVID-19 cases statewide as well as in Deep East Texas. Lufkin Mayor Bob Brown has been weighing this grim information as well as taking input from concerned citizens, and according to Lufkin Director of Public Safety Gerald Williamson, the Mayor is considering the implementation of a mask requirement.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has stopped short of making a statewide mandate ordering the usage of face coverings for safety, however, Abbott is now allowing city and county officials to issue regulations concerning face masks.

“The battle with COVID-19 is far from over. We’re still in the middle of the fight and no one needs to let their guard down,” Williamson continued. “Let’s wear our masks, practice social distancing and personal hygiene. Do your part to slow the spread of COVID in Lufkin.”

As of Friday afternoon, there were 34 lab-confirmed COVID-19 hospitalizations within the Department of State Health Services Trauma Service Area H which includes Angelina, Nacogdoches, Polk, Sabine, San Augustine, San Jacinto and Tyler counites.
