Kingsman: The Secret Service and its brand-new sequel, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, are based on a comic-book series, originally released as The Secret Service, by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. But the movie version of Kingsman is very different than the comic-book version (which wasn’t even called Kingsman when it was first released). Director Matthew Vaughn’s vision of the material is much more indebted to old James Bond movies, particularly the campy, cheeky 007 adventures of the 1970s and early ’80s starring Roger Moore as Ian Fleming’s gentleman spy.

In the new video above, ScreenCrush film critic Matt Singer explores the first Kingsman and points out all the ways The Secret Service takes images, characters, and concepts from old Bond movies and other spy franchises like The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and even non-spy movies like Dr. Strangelove and The Shining. (Matthew Vaughn must be a big Stanley Kubrick fan). Want to know why the Kingsman agents wear those big chunky glasses? Curious which Bond movies inspired the various Kingsman gadgets like the cigarette lighter hand grenade and the super-powerful ring? Our Easter Egg Hunt video will reveal all.
