French Montana Wants His Next Album to Get the Respect It Deserves

Since dropping his debut album Excuse My French in 2013, French Montana has released seven projects. But now, the New York rapper is taking his time with his next record to make sure it gets the respect he believes it deserves.

Speaking with Billboard for the publication's August issue, French revealed he's in no rush to drop his next album—a follow-up to 2017's Jungle Rules—but says he is working on the project. "I come from the mixtape era—we just dropped shit," French said. "I'm going to make sure this one gets the respect it deserves."

The Bronx rhymer also revealed he's been turning down more and more offers for music, setting his sights on working smarter—something he learned from Diddy. “One thing I learned from him is that you don’t have to rap,” he said. "Puffy still raps. But when it becomes a business, that can take away from the love of music. Some people have to tour because they got bills. You got to become that person who can take five years off and come back because you love it.”

While French's musical output as of late has slowed down, the rapper has still put some new music. In May, Montana teamed up with Lil Pump and Diplo for the Deadpool 2 song "Welcome to the Party" and joined Remy Ma in June for "New Thang."

The rapper's last project came in July 2017 when he dropped his sophomore album, Jungle Rules. Produced by Diddy, Detail, Murda Beatz, Scott Storch, Harry Fraud and more, the LP debuted at No. 3 on the Billboard 200 and was later certified gold.
