Top 10 Most Affordable Texas Cities to Live In (2025 Ranked)
As I always say, "Everything’s bigger in Texas," including the cost of living in some of the bigger cities. But if you know where to look, there are plenty of Texas towns where your dollar stretches a lot further. From the West Texas plains to the Gulf Coast breezes, here’s a countdown of the 10 most affordable places to live in Texas in 2025, and you might be surprised where Abilene lands and which city is #1.

#10: Midland - Known for its rich oil history and booming economy, Midland still offers homes at a price below the Texas state average. With strong job opportunities and numerous museums, it’s a city that combines affordability with opportunity.
#9: Odessa - Right next door to Midland, Odessa brings affordability and West Texas charm. From the Ellen Noël Art Museum to sand sledding at Monahan's Sandhills State Park, there’s no shortage of unique things to do.
#8: Bryan - Located near Texas A&M in College Station, Bryan has a small-town feel with big-town energy nearby. Affordable homes and a vibrant downtown make it a smart choice for families and students alike.
#7: Waco - Waco offers history, culture, and Magnolia Market fame, all while keeping housing costs under control. From the Waco Mammoth National Monument to Cameron Park, this city has affordability and attractions rolled into one.
#6: Spring - Just north of Houston, Spring gives you suburban life at a fraction of big-city prices. With access to Old Town Spring, botanical gardens, and Houston just down the road, it’s a solid, affordable option.
#5: San Angelo - Right in the heart of Texas, San Angelo blends affordability with natural beauty. The Concho River Walk, Fort Concho, and San Angelo State Park all add to the quality of life without breaking the bank.
#4: Laredo - This border city is rich in culture and history, with affordable living that appeals to families and young professionals alike. Lake Casa Blanca State Park adds a big outdoor draw.
#3: Lubbock & Victoria (Tie) - Lubbock is famous for Buddy Holly, Texas Tech, and wide-open affordability. Victoria, closer to the Gulf Coast, offers both culture and outdoor recreation, at a price that’s easy on the wallet.
#2: Abilene - Here’s where I get personal. Abilene isn’t just on the list, it’s home. With houses averaging around $235,000 (a full $100K less than the Texas average), it’s one of the most affordable and nicest cities in the entire Lone Star State. And trust me, I know: Abilene is so affordable that even a DJ like me, Rudy Fearless Fernandez, could afford to buy a home here.
I’m only halfway joking, but that’s the truth. From Lake Fort Phantom to the Abilene Zoo and a thriving downtown, this city proves you don’t need a big-city paycheck to enjoy a big Texas life. Y'all come and see for yourself.
#1: Wichita Falls - Topping the list is Wichita Falls, where housing costs are the lowest among major Texas cities. Between Lucy Park, Lake Wichita, and a welcoming community, it’s the most affordable place to live in Texas for 2025.
