Part Of The Old University Mall Corridor Is Still Open To The Public

We've talked about the University Mall in Nacogdoches before. If you were around Nacogdoches several years ago, you still would have been able to walk the halls and go in some of the stores that were in operation there before it was converted into more of a shopping center design, now known as the University Plaza. But what you might not realize - I know that I had no idea - is that there is still a section of the building where you can see the remnants of the old mall today.

Several years ago, the University Mall was converted into a shopping center, meaning that basically every store gets its own individual space, and there was no longer one long hallway that completely covered and connected the spaces. The only space - or so I thought - that was connected and enclosed was the main entrance that led into what would have been Beall's, the main anchor store of the mall. Now that entrance area houses T's Sandwiches and leads into Rose's.

But there's still an entrance that allows you to walk into what's left of the remnants of the hallway. And no, you don't have to sneak in to see it. It's completely open. In fact, there's actually a gym in there called the Graveyard Gym, along with USDA offices. Take a look:

Sure, most of the parts that made up the mall itself are no more. But to people like me that grew up going to the mall, there are still recognizable remnants back there. I can't believe that it took me this long to find them.
