Rare Blue Sea Dragons Are Washing Up on Texas Beaches, Don’t Touch Them

Have you ever heard of the Blue Sea Dragon? I hadn't either until just recently and odds are, most people heading to the beach this weekend haven't heard about the tiny creatures that are reportedly washing up on Texas beaches.

Blue Sea Dragons Found on Texas Beaches

According to WFAA, blue dragons, also known as Glaucus atlanticus in scientific world, are actually tiny sea slugs that float in the ocean. They are rarely seen onshore but are known to wash up when strong winds push them towards the coast.

The Harte Research Institute reported that they recently found 20 blue dragons along a short stretch of beach in Texas.

If You See a Blue Dragon, Don't Touch It

WFAA reports that those tiny blue slugs can actually deliver a pretty powerful sting.

The animals feed on Portuguese man-o-war, storing the jellyfish’s stinging cells inside their own bodies. Scientists say the slugs concentrate those cells, meaning their sting can be even more painful than the man-o-war itself.

And yes, even when washed up onto the beach they can still sting.

So treat the Blue Dragon as you would most other marine life, admire it, but don't touch. Unless you are a professional in marine life, then you are good.
