Amarillo is famous for many things, like Cadillac Ranch, weird crimes, and of course, The Big Texan. As many people know, The Big Texan is famous for its 72-oz steak challenge.

The Big Texan Steak Challenge Explained

The challenge is simple. You have to eat a 72-oz steak, a salad, a baked potato, a roll with butter, and a shrimp cocktail in one hour, and it’s free.

Many have tried and failed, and many have succeeded.  Some have even eaten multiple 72-oz steaks in minutes. While most of us would be puking our brains out, these eaters are built differently.

The Beginning of Man vs. Food

One of the first shows to popularize food challenges was Man vs. Food.  Adam Richman was the host, taking on the food challenges.

Did you know that the first episode of Man vs. Food took place in Amarillo?  Adam's first Man vs. Food challenge was at The Big Texan. The show debuted on December 3, 2008. Here's a clip from the episode.

Bobby Lee, the owner of The Big Texan, and his son Patrick Lee share stories about the episode on The Big Texan's TikTok.

This isn't the first or the last time The Big Texan has been featured on TV.  In fact, the restaurant and challenge have been featured on four major films and eight television shows. That doesn't include social media influencers featuring them on their platforms.

Amarillo Faces in a National Show

This Man vs. Food episode also featured the now gone Stockyard Cafe, and for me, it's a special segment because my father-in-law, who passed away in 2012, is seen in the background of the episode. He was eating there when they filmed the segment. The episode also includes Amarillo icon, the late AJ Swope.

Plus, Richman not only takes on The Big Texan Steak Challenge, but he also tries the Burger from Hell at the Coyote Bluff.
