Kurth Memorial Library Closed Until Further Notice

After being closed all week due to the winter weather the Kurth Memorial Library has now closed its doors until further notice. The ice and snow has caused damage to the roof, and the library will remain closed until repairs can be made. They will give us a better idea after the damage is able to be accessed and repairs begin. There will be no late fees while the library is closed. You can still check out virtual e-books and e-audios on Overdrive. 

Back in 2000 the library became a department of the City of Lufkin. The City is responsible for the grounds and ultimately the repairs to the building. The new library was built that year, with a ribbon cutting on April 26th, 2001. The roof system was most likely 20 years old too, and just couldn't take the load of all that ice and snow.

If you are a book worm, having a steady stream of literature at your disposal is imperative. There has been a literal and figurative perfect storm at the Kurth Memorial Library. It's slowed the flow of books just like the water in our pipes and electricity in our homes.

To say that it's been a hard couple of years for patrons of out beloved library is an understatement. Closed for months at a time due to Covid-19, they were just getting going again. Now this roof failure gives another bit of uncertainty.

I know the staff will be working hard behind the scenes to preserve all the local history that is on site. The Ora McMullen Genealogy Room there has so much information on Lufkin, and Angelina County, and something like that is first priority. Getting our next Stephen King Book is a little lower on the list. I am sure they will reopen as soon as possible.
