In October of 2024, we got some great news for families in the Lufkin area. The Rec + Relax Indoor Recreation Center jumped zoning hurdles and started working on the most exciting place in town for young families.

Many families are still just now hearing about the project, and others are wondering about progress now that almost a year has passed with not much news. If you told your kids about the play place coming, you likely haven't heard the end of it.

The site at 2810 Moffett Road in Lufkin broke ground in November it has rained almost non-stop here ever since. What started out as a 10-month completion date has now been pushed back because of our weather patterns.

Construction Moves Forward On 20,000 Square Foot Facility

According to KTRE, construction is now moving forward. Owner Ty Shafer said the City of Lufkin required a detention pond to counteract the large amount of concrete added to the area.

While the pond will keep water out of neighboring homes and make the area less flood-prone, it did take more time than anticipated to build. The location and size of the pond have changed since the initial plans.

He also mentioned that you should see big things happening on the site this September. That's likely when the main building will be built, at a cost of more than $7 million.
